We've had a wonderful and "Fired Up" few weeks in Kids Church, exploring some incredible stories from the Bible about the prophet Elijah. The lessons focused on two main themes: trusting God to provide for our needs and relying on Him for guidance when we feel scared.
Week 1: God Helps Me Find What I Need
Our first lesson focused on the story of Elijah and the drought from 1 Kings 17:2-16. The main idea was:
God helps me find what I need.
During a severe drought, God guided Elijah to a brook for water.
When he was hungry, God sent ravens to bring him bread and meat every morning and evening.
Later, when the brook dried up, God sent Elijah to a widow in Zarephath who was about to prepare her last meal for herself and her son.
Elijah asked her to trust God and make him a small loaf of bread first. The widow's jar of flour and jug of oil never ran empty, providing food for her family and Elijah throughout the drought.
This story showed us that God knows and cares about our needs, and we can trust Him to provide for us in special ways.
Week 3: God Guides Me When I'm Scared
In our most recent lesson, we learned the story of Elijah fleeing to Mount Horeb found in 1 Kings 19:1-9a. The big idea we explored was:
God guides me when I'm scared.
After a great victory against the prophets of the false god Baal, Elijah was threatened by Queen Jezebel and became overwhelmed with fear. He felt "burnt out" and wanted to quit.
While Elijah was on the run and exhausted, God didn't just take away his fear. Instead, He provided the help Elijah needed.
An angel from God brought Elijah food and water, which gave him the strength for his 40-day journey to Mount Horeb.
God guided Elijah to a safe place where he could rest, eat, and hide. God was Elijah's safe space.
This lesson taught us that it's okay to be scared and that God is always there to guide us and take care of us, even when our fears don't immediately disappear.
Here are a few questions you can use to continue the conversation at home:
About God's Provision: What did God provide for Elijah when he was hungry and thirsty during the drought? Can you think of a time when God helped you find something you needed?
About Fear and Guidance: In the second story, why was Elijah scared? What did God do to help him when he was afraid and on the run?
Being a Helper: The lesson mentioned that sometimes God sends us to help a friend who is scared or worried. Can you think of a way you could help someone who is afraid this week?
